The Call (S2, E1)- Kevin Covais

We are back for season 2! Our first guest is good friend and downright bad mother fucker.... Kevin Covais.

Listen to it here:

The legend could possibly begin?

I've always been a fan of Martial Arts. I'm trying to remember chronologically as best as possible and I would say it all started with old Kung Fu flicks. My entire upbringing was bombarded by ancient fighting techniques making their way to the Americas. I grew up with Ninja Turtles, Karate Kids and Kung Fu the Legend Continuesesessss? Whatever, the point is that from an early age I realized that being born in this side of the world was the best thing that could have happened to me because unlike all those suckers in the East that invented all these martial arts, here in the West I could learn all those techniques in a matter of months by doing regular household chores and making sure I found a good Sensei.

And so at the tender age of around 12 I decided it was time to start my journey. I found this old Chinese guy that hung out in the back of my middle school in his sweet van and asked him if he wanted to be my master. He was pretty excited about it, maybe a little too much, but I took that as a good sign, and so I was ready to start my training until the cops showed up and arrested his ass. I was pretty bummed for about 10 seconds and then I realized it was pizza night so I went home. I did end up renting a whole bunch of books on fighting techniques from the library and started learning the history of the different martial arts. But even at that naive age I knew books weren't going to be enough to quench my thirst for blood. My parents always preached nonviolence so there was no way to convince them about the benefits of putting their child in ass kicking classes. I also suspect that they had figured out I was a little asshole so that may have had something to do with it. This put me in a predicament. With no money for lessons I started seeking out people that could teach me whatever techniques they had learned from different arts and wanted to practice with me. Over the next couple years I met friends that had actual training and learned as much as I could about what they practiced. I didn't just ask them to teach me moves, I asked for their opinion as far as how applicable the techniques where, what they saw as strengths and weaknesses, the spiritual side of their chosen art.... actually I learned that shit on my own, I mostly asked them to teach me some sweet moves. I became the punching bag for a lot of them but with all that ass kicking, I actually got pretty decent exposure to Judo, Tae Kwon Do, MCMAP, and Pencak Silat.

So after years of dipping my toes in the proverbial water, I find myself in a position where I have both the time and means to actually start learning a Martial Art. I have decided to start Gracie Jiu Jitsu and I'm pretty excited about it. I look forward to talking about this journey and I welcome any input from NitroBlitz readers.

UFC on Fox: Shogun vs Vera

Shogun vs Vera is for the #1 contender spot for the 205 belt. Both men got completely smoked by current champion Jon Jones, so hopefully either they changed their game plan when fighting Jones, or Dan Henderson "H Bombs" Jones and wins the belt. Should be a stand up war!
Also on the main card is Machida/Bader. The only man to truly figure out Machida's style was Shogun Rua so I have my doubts that Bader will do anything significant to win this bout. Only time will tell.

Choices (Short Film)

Here is my best friend, Roshaun Page's short film... Choices :)

Unfortunately he posted it a bit too late for the Film Festival... so we made him a panelist to choose tomorrow's outcome.

Keeping On, Keeping On

Well folks, a lot of you were checking up on me via email... and for the record, I'm alright. This past weekend I had a three day weekend in which I drove a Uhaul back to Idaho and packed up the rest of my stuff and drove 15 hours each way (from California to Idaho back to California.) I wish that picking up my stuff was the only reason that I went back to Idaho, but it wasn't...

As most of you know, I had to fight a bullshit "Driving Without Privileges" charge... and I am most gracious to say that the charges were dropped down to Invalid License... So my pasty white ass can still say that I have never and (presumably) will never see the inside of a jail. I'm honestly glad that this has all come to an end... I wasn't facing any major time, but it was just the principle of the matter. I'm going to discuss the full case tomorrow on "The Call", where my guest will be former American Idol Contestant and Ultra Talented Actor Kevin Covais.

I just wanted to give you folks a teaser for tomorrow :)  THE CALL IS BACK BITCHES!

A Zombie Podcast?

Long before the boob tube became the primary source of family entertainment the radio was king. Parents and children would gather around the radio and listen to serial audio dramas or short stories. Using actors and sound effects these popular shows usually gathered a large following. Basically they were the "Breaking Bad" or "Game of Thrones" of their times. My point is that the serial audio drama is coming back, in podcast form.

The best one out there right now is called "We're Alive: A 'Zombie' Story of Survival" or "We're Alive" for short. The plot is based up a zombie like disease which spreads quickly through Los Angeles onto the rest of the world. It begins by following 3 reserve soldiers who are called to duty because of the outbreak. From there the story develops characters and very detailed events. The dialogue is actually pretty good and so is the acting.

I was a skeptic at first because I have seen, read, or heard almost every generic zombie story out there. These zombies are different in so many awesome ways that they alone make this podcast the best zombie story I've ever heard. It took me 2 parts of the first chapter to become hooked!

It can be found on itunes for free and at least give it two chapters before you decide you hate it, but if you're a fan of good storytelling and violence then you'll probably enjoy it.

I'm not affiliated with the show. I've been a huge fan of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast and the forums so that's how I ended up here. This is my first post so I thought introducing something new and different to the site would be cool.

If you end up hating me because the podcast with it.
